Pipeline and tank anodes

Galvanic anodes for buried pipelines, storage tanks, casings and wells — where soil and fresh water demand a different approach to seawater.

Pipeline and tank anodes
Overview

Buried pipelines, storage tanks, casings and wells.

Onshore pipelines and tanks sit in soil or fresh water, where electrolyte resistivity is much higher than in seawater. Magnesium anodes, with their high driving voltage, are the usual choice — often supplied pre-packaged in a low-resistivity backfill that improves performance and stabilises current output.

We supply magnesium and zinc anodes in block, rod, ribbon and pre-packaged forms, together with anodes for tank internals, tank bottoms, casings and wells.

Typical materials
  • Magnesium — standard and high-potential alloys
  • Zinc (low-resistivity soils, ribbon and grounding)
  • Aluminium (tank internals with water bottoms)
Product list

All 19 pipeline and tank anodes.

  1. C01

    Pre-Packaged Anodes

Magnesium or zinc anodes supplied in a cotton bag with gypsum, bentonite and sodium sulphate backfill, ready for burial.

  16. C16

    Borehole Anodes

Anodes for installation in vertical boreholes where surface space is limited or soil near the surface has high resistivity.

  17. C17

    Groundbed Anodes

Galvanic anode groundbeds — multiple anodes connected together to deliver the required current.

FAQ

Common questions.

Why are magnesium anodes used for buried pipelines?

Soil typically has much higher resistivity than seawater. Magnesium has the highest driving voltage of the common anode metals, so it can deliver useful current in these conditions.

What is the backfill in a pre-packaged anode?

Typically a mixture of gypsum, bentonite and sodium sulphate. It keeps moisture around the anode, lowers contact resistance and helps the anode consume evenly.

When is zinc ribbon used?

Zinc ribbon is used in lower-resistivity soils, for AC mitigation and grounding along pipelines, and beneath tank bottoms.

Can you supply anodes with cables attached?

Yes. Anodes can be supplied with lead wires of the specified type, size and length.
